What is Nā Waihoʻoluʻu Project?

Nā Waiho‘olu‘u Project is an initiative focused on preserving and sharing Native Hawaiian cultural knowledge through the lens of color and dye plants. It seeks to create an accessible digital platform that highlights the rich traditions and ecological significance of Hawaiian colors, providing educators, students, and communities with tools to deepen their understanding of the interconnectedness between color, cultural narratives, and the natural environment.

The purpose of Nā Waiho‘olu‘u Project is to bridge the gap in educational resources related to Native Hawaiian color perspectives by offering a comprehensive, culturally grounded platform. The goals include fostering a deeper appreciation for Native Hawaiian identity and traditional ecological knowledge, promoting environmental stewardship, and developing hands-on educational resources such as school garden programs and educational kits. By collaborating with local partners and engaging communities, the project aims to inspire future generations to connect with indigenous knowledge and cultivate a strong sense of place.
